Prof. Stefania Butini
University of Siena
Stefania Butini is Full Professor of Medicinal Chemistry since 2024. She graduated in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology in 1997 and got a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Siena in 2000. Between 1999 and 2000, she completed an internship at the University of Groningen (NL) working on the development of dopamine D3 receptor modulators. In 2004, she became a researcher, and in 2015, an associate professor at the University of Siena. With over 170 publications, her research is primarily focused on developing bioactive compounds, in the areas of antitumor agents, antimalarial agents, and for the treatment of CNS diseases. A key aspect of her work involves the investigation of chemistry and biology of synthetic organic molecules with therapeutic potential in neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders. Her research activity encompasses target selection, rational drug design, the discovery of new synthetic methodologies, and general strategies for synthesis, bioinformatics, and the study of structure-function relationships. Additionally, she has extensive experience coordinating Research Units in both national and international polycentric research projects related to drug development across various fields.
